It was compiled from 1801 to 1809, and when completed it was bound in 20 volumes of 16,033 pages and 581 plates engraved by Andrew Bell. The editor, James Millar (1762 - 1827), an Edinburgh physician and natural scientist, worked mightily to correct the deficiencies and omissions caused in the third edition by the untimely death of Macfarquhar.
