This Commodore William Bainbridge Comitia Americana Medal is a commemorative medallion restrike of a Congressional Gold Medal for his heroic leadership during the capture of HMS Java off the coast of Bahia Brazil on December 29, 1812. This item for sale is one of a total of only 808 William Bainbridge bronze restrike medallions that were issued by the U. S. Mint from fiscal year 1968 through fiscal year 1976. This is a commemorative re-issue of the original Congressional Gold Medal authorized by Congress on March 3, 1813. The original gold medal was engraved by Moritz Fürst, an Austrian born American who worked at the U. S. Mint as an engraver from 1812 to 1839.
