Listed at 6.00 USD. 1953 Nigerian Postage Stamps (set of 2) This is a 6d (six pence) Nigerian postage stamp featuring the iconic Ife Bronze head, a symbol of Nigerian art and culture. The stamp was issued in 1953, seven years before Nigeria gained independence from Great Britain. The image on the stamp is based on one of eighteen copper alloy sculptures unearthed in 1938 at Ife, Nigeria, the religious and royal center of the Yoruba people. The original bronze head is believed to represent a king (Ooni) and dates back to the 14th-15th century CE. The naturalistic features and sophisticated craftsmanship of the Ife heads challenged Western conceptions of African art at the time of their discovery.
