Theory of operation of this transformer is simple enough: the ring is the secondary, and your turn (or turns) of current-carrying wire represents the primary in this current sensing system. A current flowing through your wire is sensed by the 'secondary' coil in the ring and the induced current will be proportionally smaller than the current from your wire. The smaller induced current may then be used for all kinds of things, but usually for overload sensing, metering, ground fault detection, power-limiting in the switch-mode feedback circuit... the applications are nearly endless.
