Check the listing for details. African Mask Djimini 2209. Listed at 430.05 USD. The Djimini, like the Tagouana, are Mandé from northern Ivory Coast. During the conquests of Samory, they paid a heavy price for not wanting to deal with him. Colonized by France in the 19th century, they adopted the imported religion. For these two reasons, masks and statuary have largely disappeared among these two peoples. However, a few rare masks and statues which were certain to be representations of good spirits were preserved. We notice the thick black patina on the surface of this mask above. This is due to the art of the Djimini who mastered the varnishing of pottery using tree resins, techniques that they replicated on the surface of the masks. As for the use of the object, we have forgotten its accuracy. However, it remains worn during masquerades during ritual ceremonies. Item.
