Nice ornate cast iron hinge in perfect shape except for the major flaw that it is missing the spring. The condition on these is original. What little remaining paint that was on them was removed and they were cleaned down to the bare metal and clear coated to help protect from rust until you paint them in your desired color. While it may appear a bit black that is just due to the clear on the bare cast iron. I use clear coat because it protects the finish and makes them ready for you to paint in the color of your choice but better allows you to inspect them for defects that may exist. Again note that these are missing the spring and are being sold as replacement parts for a similar hinge that you may have with a good spring but broken hinge. While I do my best to describe them, the pictures remain your best description. I have not installed these nor have I ever seen a pair in use (I'm old but these are still before my time) so I can't really verify condition outside of my visual observations. C-3
