Contrary to popular belief there are still a very large number of wireline phones in existence in both the home and in business. There are over 800 million wireline phones world wide in use. Technically it still needs a phone cord connected from your existing wireline phone to this device, but you are not hooking up to a wall jack anymore. You are using the AT&T wireless system and not the wireline system. You will need to purchase a phone plan with AT&T wireless by converting your existing wireline phone to their network. Perhaps you already have service with AT&T and have a wireline phone service with another company. You simply need to go into an AT&T store or possibly make a call to their customer service and have them convert your existing wireline phone number to their network. Conversion time will vary. Once you have this in place you will plug in the device's power (included battery is already installed as well), detach your phone cord from your existing wireline phone from its wall jack and put into the jack on the back of the phone system and turn on the device. In a matter of a couple of minutes you are now on AT&T's wireless network and can now make calls and access voicemail. Typical phone plans with AT&T do not charge you for long distance and voicemail. You should have unlimited talk and voicemail with their plans. Please check with AT&T customer service to discuss this before buying this system I have listed to verify. If you have a cordless wireline phone, you don't need to plug your phone into the wall jack anymore. By connecting it to this system you are free from doing that. You're on the AT&T wireless network using this device. You probably were paying additional for long distance phone calls with your existing wireline service and you probably weren't able to get voicemail either. With this system on AT&T's network you should have both. I purchased this system for a relative and they used it for a few years. They were able to use their existing wireline phone as before, make long distance calls and access voicemail whenever their phone was being used or when they weren't available to pick up the call. They were very happy with the system. Unfortunately my relative is no longer with us and this has been put away in its box since. I uncovered it recently and decided to list it at much less than it originally cost me. Hopefully there's someone that can put this to use. You'll receive the original box with device, power adapter, battery (already installed into the system), phone cord and manuals are included. There is a small moisture stain on the front and back of the quick start and regular manuals that I accidentally did not notice when I was setting it on a table.
