These two exquisite little cases were made in Austria and are sterling silver, engraved, with a romantic enameled scene of a maiden and her squire in a country setting.on the tops. Black enamel on the bottoms. They belonged to my grandmother and have been in my family for the last hundred years that I know of, possibly longer. The larger one was used as a cigarette case in those days, when cigarettes were much smaller, and the smaller one was a tiny loose powder compact. The tiny silver frame on the inside of the compact held a little screen at one time to go over the loose powder plus a tiny down powder puff. The two pieces have not been used in the last seventy-five or eighty years and have resided in a jewelry box since the 1940s. Some tiny scratches on the top of the cigarette case though not really visible to the naked eye.. Both little boxes have some light scratches on the bottoms consistent with age and use. Both boxes close tightly and securely and hinges are in fine condition. The cigarette case would not hold today's cigarettes, legitimate ones anyway, which are too long, although either box can be used as a pill box or for aspirin, vitamins or the like. Lovely in an evening bag for such needs. Or just to display in a pretty glass case. Likely from the Austrian Empire era, although I have no documentation on the boxes as they are family heirlooms.
