The compass is made of what appears to be brass. According to the site below, it was used during WWI by members of the U.S. Engineer Department (U.S.E.D.) also known as the Army Corps of Engineers. There are two rifle-type sights that can be folded up or down to align with a landmark. The lens and marching course marks were adjustable. This specimen has its original patina and is very well-worn with patches of rust and grime throughout. A refurbishment could go a long way in bringing this museum piece back to its original form. Stamped on the bottom are the words: CREAGH-OSBOURNE MARCHING COMPASS, MARK VII, MOD. D1 SPERRY GYROSCOPE, CO BROOKLYN, NY 28816 A version of this appears in the Pritzker Military Museum and Library. https://www.pritzkermilitary.org/explore/museum/digital-collection/view/oclc/971201465
