This two volume 1943 5th edition of Bartels Catalogue of U.S. Stamped Envelops, Also referred to as the Thorp catalog, and the numbering system widely in use prior to the UPSS catalogs, is in good condition with a tight binding and no missing or torn pages. Volume 1 lists all known envelopes starting with the 1853 Nesbitt issue all the way to the War Department stationery. Volume 2 contains large illustrations of all of the cutting knives of the listed envelopes. Of course now we have the UPSS catalog and their associated full size illustrations of all the cutting knives in actual size, but as I have found over the years, many of the "old" stationery collections are annotated with Thorp numbers so this is a handy reference to help with identification.
