They are not perfect, because they are cut from the natural horns of water buffalo in the Philippines. They are not totally black as there are natural whitish streaks, but predominantly black. If you didn't know to look, you would not see the streaking. Polished horn is very shiny and pretty. They make great thread holders as seen in the above picture. If you have a thread book; just sew these in and they hold very nicely. Or just use them individually on their own, such as the card stock thread holders. There is a tiny whole at the top of each one if you wanted to secure them in a thread book - or whatever you have in mine. I have not ever seen them for less than $2.00 ea.
