Somewhere around 1943 an army general order was issued allowing all Canadian Army infantry regiments to wear a red swatch of cloth behind their cap badges. Not all regiments adopted that but some did. Some had done so already. Examples are the Loyal Edmonton Regiment, Brockville Rifles, Victoria Rifles and some corps like the Engineers. These are also used behind the badge of the 48th Highlanders of Canada in the voided section behind the numerals as seen. If your badge requires a cloth swatch to make it look finished this pure wool cloth cut from tartan is perfectly correct. This is cut from kilt tartan and measures 2 1/2" square.
