This listing is for a beautiful antique Sterling Silver sugar basket fitted with a vivid cobalt blue glass liner, c. 1900. This silver body is decorated with an embossed band around the top edge and has a stationary handle with a cartouche on center top for monogram (unused). Basket sits on a low stepped base. Marked with the Durgin trademark stamp and "Sterling, 103" and also has a hand written number "C856" on the base. The William B. Durgin Company was in business in both Concord NH and in Providence RI from 1880-1905 when they were absorbed into the Gorham Company Gorham continued to use the Durgin script trademark stamp used on this item until about 1930. Sugar baskets began to be replaced in the early 19th Century when sugar bowls became popular. These beautiful baskets have never lost their popularity with collectors and are highly collected today. Measures 5 3/4" high (to top of handle), 2 1/2" high (to top of sides) with a 4 1/8" top diameter. The sterling basket weighs 146 grams not including the liner with a combined weight of 13 ounces. This lovely sugar basket is in excellent Estate condition reflecting only minimal signs of normal wear. There are a couple of tiny, faint dings on the sides that are barely noticed and the handle is ever so slightly out of round. These minor issues don't affect the beauty of this lovely sugar basket and are only noticed with very close inspection. The glass liner has one tiny no-harm nick on the outer rim.
