Check the listing for details. Early Wheeler, Madden & Clemson rip saw with split nuts. Condition: Used. Listed at 277.57 USD. Fine example of an early Wheeler, Madden & Clemson rip saw. This is a large saw. The blade is 28 in. long and measures about 7 ½ in. wide at the heel and 2 ¾ in. at the toe. Overall length of the saw is 33 in. The blade, which is reasonably true, still has the original nib and a clearly legible etch. It is filed 5 PPI and is stamped as such on the heel. The handle, with full horns, is in excellent condition and is attached with split nuts. Both the etch and medallion include the XCLR mark and identify the maker as “Wheeler, Madden & Clemson, Middletown, N.Y.”. I estimate it to date to the 1870s or early 1880s, since by the late 1880s most American saw manufactures had abandoned splits nuts in favour of the newly developed cap screws found on all later American saws. As for condition issues, it should be noted that there are some small areas of pitting as well as some hammer marks on the blade (see photos). These can be considered blemishes rather than defects, however, and if the saw were freshly jointed and sharpened, it could easily be put right back to work as a user, or as part of a collection of early American (non-Disston) handsaws.
