It is impervious to nearly all chemicals, etc. It is molded or poured into a form to harden. The top surface is fairly smooth but the bottom is a bit uneven showing signs of a viscous fluid having solidified. It is the same material all the way through so scuffs and scratches should buff out if they are an issue. The backside and edges tend to have adhesive residue from past use--this can be scraped off with a good husky sharp paint scrapper. The images below give an indication of what the edges look like where it has been cut, drilled or? This material can be cut or drilled with carbide tipped or abrasive cutting tools as indicated below. The image below shows the backside with "liquid nails" adhesive residue.
