FINE SNUFF BOX / MATCH SAFE / KNICK KNACK / PEPPERMINT VICTORIAN 1899 SILVER BOX FINE SNUFF BOX / MATCH SAFE / KNICK KNACK / PEPPERMINT VICTORIAN 1899 SILVER BOX OBJECT D’ ART ~ 5 HALLMARKS This is a small, fine condition Antique pocket snuff box / match safe / trinket / peppermint box that has 5 Dutch Hallmarks with a Hallmark date for 1899. These small pocket containers were used in the Netherlands for candy and would typically contain pieces of peppermint. These small boxes were typically made in silver, and were considered an Object D `Art. Most are similar, but come in many different shapes, styles, decorations and engravings. Some pieces, such as this one, combined many different embossed shapes and patterns with extensive zig zag and punch dot hand engravings to create a fancy, eye appealing presentation. This would have been not only a utilitarian object, but small enough to carry as a necessary accoutrement for any affluent and fashionable Gentleman or Lady. This piece is completely hand made of silver. It is about 2 1/4" tall x 1 1/4" wide x 1 1/4” deep and weighs .8 ounces or 25 grams. Their rarity is due not only to surviving 125 years; but their size lends itself to easily being lost. This piece is in fine Condition for its extreme age and the silver top opens properly and closes very tightly. Dutch hallmarks are hard to decipher sometimes for lack of published information. This piece has 5 hallmarks: 3 on the bottom, 1 on the inside top, and one on the left inside lip “p” that is the letter date for 1899. The Lion mark is minimum .833 silver purity. The 77B is an unidentified mark but is identical to another silver box with an 1876 date mark. The large script initials R B I believe are either a monogram or the initials of a retailer. This piece has even, light aged patina and the hand engraving is crisp and shows very little wear or polishing. I only found one hard to notice, very slight indentation on one side of the very top domed square. This would be perfect for any Gentleman or Ladies accessory collector, miniature, smalls, snuff, match safe, knickknack, decorator, keepsake, paper weight, desk accessory / conversation piece or an Object D’ Art, and could still be used today for peppermint pieces.
