After dealing with this issue on my own mk4 GLI and 20th Anniversary GTI and trying solutions from Dieselgeek and Uro Tuning, I found that the parts still popping out. Frustrated, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I turned to Facebook Marketplace, bought a 3D printer, and started printing my own solution. Color may vary Black,White, etc IG: @baggedmk6 Locking clip works with these other brand First Gear Getter bushing mentioned above. Yes, similar products are available online, but waiting three weeks for shipping from China to regain 5th and 6th gear was not a fast enough solution . So, I got to work and began testing different materials to find the best fit. Installation is straightforward: remove the center console* inside the cabin, clear away any remnants of the old rubber bushing, and press the new part into the steel bell crank to the left of the shifter stick. Put back together, slip on the clip for added security. Please note: that the locking clip is designed to fit securely, and once it is in place, it cannot be easily removed. If removal is necessary, proceed with caution to avoid potential damage to the clip. Version 1 (PLA Plastic): •Pros: Affordable and held up well overall. •Cons: Less heat-resistant, leading to slight warping of the locking clip from the heat in the shifter area. Allowed the locking clip to shift a Little bit,but still stayed functional. •Freezer Test: Passed without becoming brittle. Version 2 (PET-G Plastic): •Pros: More expensive but far more heat-resistant. Held up flawlessly in both heat and freezer tests. •Cons: more expensive but it’s solid as a rock! With these tests, I’ve created a solution that is reliable and doesn’t require waiting weeks for shipping as I’m locally printing them in New Jersey in my garage. 🤠 Replace your damaged or missing First Gear Getter and relay ball on your 2000-2007 Mk4 and early Mk5 shift lever with innovative bell crank relay socket and keep it locked in with this locking clip. Instead of purchasing a new shifter shaft assembly from the dealer for approximately $100 and undergoing the extensive process of removing the exhaust, heat shield, and shifter box, you can use this simple repair kit.
