Cohan: Rare Performances Curated by Chip Deffaa (new CD). This is the most comprehensive collection available of performances by Cohan himself. Chip Deffaa, the leading authority on Cohan, has gathered rarities from his own collection, including material never before available on CD. We hear the early studio recordings of Cohan as well as remarkably vivid, later "live" radio performances by him--everything from Cohan singing songs he made famous (like "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy," "Give My Regards to Broadway," and "Over There") to Cohan giving speeches and even rehearsing one of his plays. This album also includes performances of Cohan numbers by some of his contemporaries, ranging from banjo virtuoso Vess Ossman to opera legend Enrico Caruso, to Broadway star Ethel Levey (Cohan's first wife). Cohan (1878-1942) was known as "the Man Who Owns Broadway." He was memorably portrayed onscreen by James Cagney in the film "Yankee Doodle Dandy." This album contains 24 vintage recordings, plus two new bonus tracks, with Jon Peterson--the foremost interpreter of Cohan's music today--singing "The Yankee Doodle Boy" and Deffaa himself making the first-ever studio recording of the song that was Cohan's final summation on life, "Life is Like a Musical Comedy." This album is a companion to "Chip Deffaa's Broadway and Vaudeville Legends" CD (which includes additional work by Cohan, along with recordings by Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor, Fanny Brice, Nora Bayes, Sophie Tucker, etc.), "Chip Deffaa's The George M. Cohan Revue: The Cast Album," and "Chip Deffaa's The George M. Cohan Songbook."
