It is powered by one 9V battery and is shown functional in the photos with just the overhead light on medium low and the meter set to 1x sensitivity. Of note, the left side of the battery door on the back has a small chip such that it doesn't latch fully on that side, but the door stays closed- I usually keep a little piece of tape to further stabilize it so it doesn't break.
