Large Secessionist Wrought Iron Candelabra Large architectural 4 lite candelabra done in the European Secessionist style. Secession was in reaction to the established criteria for judging art that prevailed at the end of the 19th century. First in Vienna and soon in Germany and the rest of the continent, artists, architects, and designers began expressing their ideas in strictly non-academic styles. Although there is no one style that typifies the Secession, it is generally considered an offshoot of Art Nouveau. This piece is characteristic of the more geometric designs of the genre. Made of cast & wrought iron with the original brown patina intact and untouched. The large piece measures 13.5" tall by 17" wide at the widest and the base measures 7.5" by 5.5". There's some stylized incised grape & vine decoration on the base also in the secessionist style that appears to be hand hammered and even the small ball pieces have a hammered faceted surface. Very heavy (weighs almost 8 lbs.) and beautifully constructed, the piece was probably made in Germany or Austria circa 1900-20. No apparent marks visible.
