On August 20th Isaac and three others were heading to Deadwood from Crook City when they were attacked by Lakota Indians and killed. After it was discovered that one of Thompson's wounds was to his back, the Marshal was arrested for murder. Before the trial could take place, Sheriff Thompson's clothing, which was the vital evidence to prove the murder charge, was burned by the undertaker.
