Smith has been popular with collectors since they were first published in 1971. There are 5 paperback books with black & white pictures and 3 hardcover books with color pictures. The entire series is numbered: books 1 through 8 in sequence.This listing is for a very rare COMPLETE SET: All 8 of Patricia R. Smith's popular books.The paperback set of 5 books was complete by 1983 and the books were republished with updated values in 1991. Our paperback books are from the 1991 printing.The three hardcover books (shown top of the stack in the photo above) were published in 1993, 1994 and 1995: all three appear to be First Edition (I don't know if they were published again.)The books measure 8.5 x 11 and each book has approximately 300 pages (more or less.) These books are used but all are in good to very good condition as the photos show. There may be some slight foxing on the edges of the older books (foxing is the tanning that happens to paper as it ages.)Patricia R Smith's books are chock-full of wonderful information and loads of pictures. The books are organized by manufacturer, so each book may have a little bit about Madame Alexander dolls, a little more about American Character dolls, plus a little about Eegee, Uneeda, Sayco, Ideal... all the doll companies including Canadian, Italian and many other nationalities. I have studied these books more than any of my other doll books.If you collect modern vinyl dolls from the 1930's on up, these books are completely fascinating. Patricia R. Smith was one of the first to write doll books about modern vinyl so she was pioneering: for a long time her books were almost the only reliable source for info on modern dollsI love the books because there's so much variety: the books touch on almost all kinds of modern dolls so you can really learn a lot and have a good time doing it. And, you may find one or more of your mystery dolls in these books, too! The paperback books are shown first in the photos above, and the 3 hardcover books with color photos are shown last. The color photos in the hardcover books are beautiful.The Patricia R Smith books were published by COLLECTOR BOOKS, which stopped printing in 2010. This is a huge loss for doll collectors and I was very sorry to hear of it. Collector books were priced reasonably, the format was easy to follow and the books were written by doll collectors who loved their subject. Some of my own doll collector friends had their books published through Collector Books, so they were a very accessible company. Considering the books are out-of-print, and becoming collectible in their own right, this is a bargain on books that won't be available again ~ because Collector Books has gone out of business.
