Poland emerged from World War I as an independent state through the Treaty of Versailles, signed in June 1919. Across the country, people experienced new-found freedom and prosperity, a condition that would end abruptly twenty years later with the devastating Invasion by Nazi Germany that initiated WW II. But, as the summer of 1920 began, Warsaw cafes were crowded, stock markets were rising, and people were enjoying personal moments of joy. Name Day, being the most joyous of celebrations for any individual, was a catalyst for extravagance by those who could now afford it. Meteorological records show that June 27 was a hot and rainy day in Warsaw. Despite the inconvenient weather, that evening, perhaps over a celebratory dinner, a silver cigarette case was presented as a gift by one person to a very good friend, engraved with the recipient's initial "D" and inscribed in Polish (which, if you can't translate yourself, probably means that someone else should buy it.) We can surmise little else about them and, one century later, can only imagine who they were and how they endured what was to follow.
