S.S Axwell was built by John Crown & Sons for Furness Withy & Co of West Hartlepool in 1909. She was a cargo tanker that was sold to Broomhill Collieries of Newcastle in 1912 to transport coal but was sadly sunk during WW1 by a torpedo from the German submarine UB-56 in 1917, with the loss of two lives.
