Of rectangular form with rounded corners, the cover and base are decorated in translucent plique-à-jour enamel with a scene of a crane amid flowering branches beneath a rising sun, rendered in delicate shades of blue, violet, turquoise, and orange over a finely textured gilt ground. The sides with a repeating geometric petal border in turquoise, white, and cobalt blue enamel. The thumbpiece is set with a cabochon amethyst. The interior is richly gilded and engraved with a mirrored version of the exterior motif. Total weight is 162 g
