Check the listing for details. "Southern Express Co. Atlanta Ga." dcds on cover c. 1867 - see description. Color: Green. Listed at 129.99 USD. well-struck "Southern Express Co. Atlanta GA Sep 10" double circle datestamp on buff colored cover to "Col. D.C. Barrow, Athens Ga." with "From Langston, Crane & Hammock, Atlanta Ga." at bottom the cover has handwritten notes by famed US and Confederate postal history dealer Jack. E. Molesworth of Boston. Anytime you see writing like this on the back of a cover, you can thank Jack. Anyway, Jack wrote, "...Almost surely CSA Use, but as PSE Cert opines, "No Evidence of CSA Use"" and priced the cover at $500. My research finds that the company had a printed advertisement on page 194 in the 1867 edition of Barnwell's Atlanta City Directory (which I found on a google search for ""Langston, Crane & Hammock" Atlanta") that identified the owners as T.L. Langston, Ben E. Crane and Cicero C. Hammock. A google search for Ben E. Crane found this "Crane, Benjamin Elliot, b. Dec. 12, 1835 in Athens, bro. to J.R. & W.F. Crane; bro.-in-law to C.P. Morton; grad. of the Univ. of GA in 1854; went to Troy, NY where he studied Civil Engineering at the Polytechnic Inst.; returned to Lexington GA and entered into a partnership with Mr. Langston; enlisted July 17, 1861; private; appt’d. company QM; commissioned Capt. and Act. QM in Cobb’s Legion May 15, 1862; commissioned and promoted to brigade QM in 1863 with the rank of Maj.; assigned to Gen. Henry Rootes Jackson’s staff as Brig. QM in Savannah GA Sept. 29, 1863; captured in Athens, GA May 8, 1865; entered into the business venture of Williams, Langston & Crane; m. Sarah Conley Clayton of Atlanta July 21, 1867; organized and served as President of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce; chosen to preside over the National Commercial Convention in St. Louis in 1872; selected member of Georgia's Constitution Convention from the thirty-fifth District July 11, 1877; d. Jan. 15, 1885; buried in Oakland Cem., Atlanta, GA." Hammock's wikipedia page states that he served in both the Mexican American and Civil War as a commissioned officer in the Confederate Army. After the war, he joined up with Langston and Crane, and later served as the mayor of Atlanta during reconstruction in 1873, 1875 and 1876. Therefore, while Crane and Langston partnered prior to the war, it seems that Hammock did not join the firm until after the war. Thus, I am sorry to say Jack, this is not a Civil War use. It is a postwar use and is thus priced accordingly. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ BUY WITH CONFIDENCEI am a true professional philatelist, doing this for a living since 1995.
