It has hints of red, yellow, green, and blue. Its obverse features Isabel Quintanilla’s painting of Spanish botanist Jose Celestino Mutis examining a flower with a magnifying glass. It also depicts a globe showing the Americas with a hummingbird pattern in the underprint and a stylized branch of a cinchona tree. The reverse of the note is in a vertical orientation and displays the coat of arms, a fleur-de-lys, and the early site plans for the Royal Botanical Gardens in Madrid. Also on the reverse are the neoclassical gate of the gardens, the “Mutisia Clematis” plate of a plant sent by Mutis to Linneo from New Granada, and a Spanish text from Mutis’ “History of the Cinchona Tree”. The banknote contains a green solid security thread and bears a watermark that reveals Fray Bartolome de Las Casas and 500. The banknote is 138 x 68 mm in size and is signed by Esteban Rospide Echeto, Mariano Mariano Rubio Jimenez, and Jesus Urdiola Salvador. This particular paper bill is in uncirculated condition.
