Fantastic Victorian card case in sterling silver curved to fit comfortably on the hip , these card holders were used during Victorian times to hold a person’s name card as a literal calling card for when they went visiting. It is elaborately carved with lions or griffins flanking what looks like a double MM initial on the front. It opens with a hinge which works well but has been dented at the closing (see top). This imperfection does not take away from the beauty or unique nature of the piece. I have never seen one like it. I weighed it on my postal scale (because that is the only thing I have) and it is 47.1 gms. It is marked sterling as well as some other markings which I am unable to make out. A wonderful collectible.
