Indicator globe and case are heavy duty plastic. I'm not sure what the white buttons do, but one slips in and out, the other, larger one doesn't seem to move. I don't know how anything about the compass, but the pointer moves in correct positions, so I don't think the white buttons have any effect on functionality. There are two screw heads labeled E/W and N/S, which I believe are for calibration.
