White Star Line Commodore Sir Bertram Fox Hayes (1864-1941) Signed and inscribed card. The great Sea Captain inscribes these words of wisdom..... A last word from an old man to his son. "My son, I have had many troubles on my way through this life but most of them never happened." Bertram F. Hayes4 3/8" X 3 1/2" card has light toning consistent with age. Collector's inscription and scrapbook mounting residue on back. Obtained in October 1925 by an autograph collector of WWI British military leaders. Note: In 1898 he joined the White Star Line and took command of the liner Britannic in 1899. During the Boer War the liner carried 37,000 troops to South Africa, and he was awarded the Transport Medal. He went on to command other White Star liners, including the Adriatic. As captain, he brought home from New York members of the Titanic’s crew that survived the sinking. Hayes appeared before the Titanic Inquiry conducted by the British Wreck Commission to give evidence about his experiences negotiating ice fields at sea. In 1915 he took command of the RMS Olympic and served aboard her through the remainder of World War I. He rammed and sunk two enemy U-boats that imperiled the Olympic and 3500+ U.S. troops. During the war, the Olympic carried more than 200,000 troops to the European battlegrounds. Bertram Hayes was knighted in 1920, and in 1922 he took command of the Majestic, the world’s largest ship. In 1922 Hayes was named Commodore of the White Star fleet. He never had had an accident during his 25 years in command of White Star liners.
