Check the listing for details. WW2 RAF FIGHTER PILOT'S map entitled "EASTERN COUNTIES (SOUTH)". Listed at 35.97 USD. This WW2 RAF map is one of a large collection from the estate of WING COMMANDER WILF SIZER (DFC & BAR). Having joined the RAF in 1938, he was already a Hurricane fighter pilot when War broke out, and therefore fought during the Fall of France and the Dunkirk Evacuation. He made several 'kills' during this period and was even shot down twice himself, the second occasion just South of Dunkirk on May 31st 1940 as he engaged a German formation bombing the troop filled beaches. During his own evacuation from Dunkirk, the steamer on which he was travelling was sunk by Stuka dive bombers. He went on to fight throughout the Battle of Britain, flew Spitfires in the North African Campaign and eventually commanded No. 93 Squadron during the Invasion of Sicily and beyond. (There is plenty more information about his incredible career available online). Not all of his maps necessarily reflect where he was serving at any given time, but it seems that he kept multiple editions, duplicates and even acquired the odd map that had previously belonged to other airmen. THIS PARTICULAR EXAMPLE, entitled "EASTERN COUNTIES (SOUTH)" was printed in 1937 and would have had a brown card cover. This has been removed (as was often the case) for easier service use. A strip of it remains attached to the rear. In good condition with some light fold wear. (Seller's Ref - DW0523 / 141)
