A nice example of a WW-I & WW-II eraRoyal NavalHMS Whirlwind D-30Crew Member's Lady's Compact Gift A WW1 Admiralty V & W Type DestroyerHMS Whirlwind was built by Swan Hunter at Wallsend-on-Tyneand launched in 1917. Commissioned in March 1918she served in the inter-war period before being pressed into front-lineservice once again with the outbreak of WW-II In April 1940 she was one of the Royal Naval escorts to the British landingsat Namsos in Norway after the German invasion of the country. Surviving that ill-fated campaign, HMS Whirlwind, under the command of Lt.Cdr John Malcolm Rogers, was deployed on anti-submarine patrols south-west of Ireland,as part of the Royal Navy's 11th Destroyer Flotilla However shortly after deployment she was torpedoed by U-34 under the commandof Wilhelm Rollmann Badly damaged and with 57 members of ship's company killedin the German submarine attack,Royal Naval Destroyer HMS Westcott, (also on the same patrol),came alongside and rescued the surviving crew. Then retiring to a safe distance HMS Westcottproceeded to send HMS Whirlwind to the bottom with torpedoes & her deck guns, before returning to Falmouth to disembarkWhirlwind's surviving crew members. Measuring some 3" across and usually bought for a loved-one from the on-board shop or NAAFI, this lovely machine-turned, copper-brass coloured Compact, bears the proud crest of HMS Whirlwind to the front,(and though minus the powder-puff within), is in a superb condition overall.
