These boxes were quite popular in Wisconsin for use in small skiffs, allowing hunters to navigate through cattails and wild rice. They were designed to keep guns handy for when ducks suddenly emerged from cover. This particular box is crafted from an old Remington UMC steel-lined shell crate. It features steel hinges on the back and brass hooks on the front, which have been replaced at some point. Inside the lid, there are nails and a variety of screws securing the gun rests. The hinges are bolted on with square nuts. The box measures 15 inches long, 9- 1/4 inches wide, and 13 inches tall. It was purchased from the grandson of the original builder/owner, who cleaned it up and applied shellac in the 1970s. The box is in excellent condition and is well-made.
