ANTIQUE SURVEYOR TRANSIT by BUFF & BUFF MANUFACTURING CO., BOSTON,1871-1898. Recently unearthed from our old private estate .. relegated to storage during 70's, aquired from an old San Francisco estate. Stored since within an above ground, dry area, as evidenced in photos, i.e., no rust & scope has never been left outside it's case box as far as we know. SCOPE:Field telescope, black paint & brass, resides in original solid mahogany wood fitted case, original leather embossed strapping, case w/interior origina label & a Buff & Buff original bio/Hx page. We're told the scope is of "alidade" functionality. None the less, an early transit tripod is included, as shown. See description below & all detailed photos, please. No.20508 appears on front center shank. No. 3798 is etched onto one end of telescope's brass cover. Model no? Telescope is approx. 17". Fitted into original solid mahogany dovetailed case w/labels, a company history bio page. Based on number 20508, we believe this indicates it was mfgr'd in 1920; 508th in their production line. Condition is GREAT .. no sign of abuse anywhere other than the normal use indications on scope. Overall, very well preserved for it's considerable age .. circa 1920 - 30s we believe. HTF such a handsome scope by this renowned precision technical engineering co. out of Boston, MA. Take a look at their info. sheet affixed inside top of solid, strong & sturdy wood case box w/dovetail joinery, no less. Exterior leather remains intact on case box. Refer to detailed photos of all. Scope, it's original wood case box, plus the early antique tripod .. which may not be original to this scope, IF, infact, an alidade functionary type of scope; we leave this determination to the Buyer. For now, we're selling all items as shown, together. We've included two alidade info sheets for your review. The early Tripod has a small wedge of wood missing .. seen in photo; can be repaired or simply rotated. Doesn't affect structural integrity of it's surrounding mounting block.
